The premise of the Grapefruit Diet is based on an alleged "magical" ingredient in grapefruits, that, when eaten with protein, theoretically triggers fat burning and causes weight loss. The diet is designed to promote fast weight loss; unfortunately, the weight lost is primarily from fluids and not fat and generally returns as soon as the dieter goes off the diet.

Is Grapefruit Seed Extract Any Good?

I've read about the anti-fungal properties of grapefruit seed extract, but I have also read about the potential presence of benzethonium chloride and other chemicals used in the manufacturing process. Is grapefruit seed extract safe?

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) comes from the seed, pulp and white membranes of grapefruit. It has a reputation as an antifungal and antibacterial agent, but when I discussed your question with Tieraona Low Dog, M.D., director of the Fellowship at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, and an authority on botanical medicine, she said that it is unclear how potent GSE is as an antibacterial or antifungal. She said that many grapefruit seed extracts on the market are adulterated and noted that a German study of six commercial grapefruit seed extracts showed that five of these products contained benzethonium chloride, a synthetic antimicrobial often used in cosmetics and other topical preparations, as well as the preservatives triclosan and methylparaben.

Dr. Low Dog adds that this finding is consistent with those of other researchers who have found benzethonium chloride or triclosan in samples of liquid and powdered grapefruit seed extracts. When grapefruit seed extract is used topically (say, for treatment of athlete's foot as I have recommended), the presence of these synthetic substances is not a big issue. But she cautions that grapefruit seed extract often is recommended for treatment of infant thrush (also a fungal infection) and says she would not recommended putting a potentially adulterated product in an infant's mouth or that anyone use it internally.

It is probably safe to put a few drops of grapefruit seed extract in water in a spray bottle for an odorless way to kill household mold and mildew. As a treatment for athlete's foot, you can try applying full strength grapefruit seed extract to the affected area two to three times a day. You can also use it as an alternative to tea tree oil to treat nail fungus. Paint it on affected nails twice a day for at least two months. But given the evidence of apparent widespread adulteration of grapefruit seed extract, I agree that it shouldn't be taken internally.

Grapefruit Diet

For many people who lived during the 70s, the mere mention of the era may bring back images of All-Star Converse sneakers, disco music, and hippies. But to those people who were fighting off flabs during that decade, it calls to mind memories of consuming lots and lots of grapefruits.

The grapefruit diet plan, also called the Hollywood diet, began during the 1930s and became infamous during the 70s. Its popularity declined after Mayo Clinic expressed disapproval of its process, regarding it as unbalanced and unsafe. As a result, it became widely considered as a fad diet, and was shunned by many dietitians and other health-conscious individuals. However, in recent years, the grapefruit diet plan is slowly regaining its popularity after new findings revealed its effectiveness against weight gain.

What Grapefruit Diet is all about

Initially designed to last from 12 to 18 days, the grapefruit diet is comprised of accompanying every meal with a serving of fresh grapefruit or unsweetened grapefruit juice. A grapefruit diet meal is usually composed of protein-rich foods-- like bacons and eggs-- and veggies that are all low in complex carbs. This diet plan is supposed to help a person lose 52 pounds in a short amount of time. However, for this diet plan to be truly successful, a person is required to take up only 800 calories per day. This diet plan also requires drinking 8 glasses of water every day, as well as limitless amount of black coffee. Moreover, a person going through the grapefruit diet should avoid eating in-between meals.

Cut and Eat Grapefruit

How to cut a grapefruit for eating

Place the grapefruit on a cutting board or similar surface.

Take a sharp knife, a steak knife will work for example, and bisecting the middle, cut the grapefruit into equal halves.

With the two even halves, cut the triangles of fruit out following the natural divisions between pieces in each half.

With a normal-sized spoon (soup spoons do not work well) wedge the spoon underneath each triangle of fruit. Lift out and enjoy.

If you have a grapefruit spoon, you can easily dig out the pieces with this tool (which sells for under $5.00 in any home improvement or home store)

Truth About Grapefruit Seed Extract

Since my original post on Grapefruit Seed Extract, I've stumbled upon some new eye-opening information, so I thought I'd expand the subject here.

The big controversy that's been going on for years with Grapefruit Seed Extract lies in its potential to be contaminated with benzalkonium chloride, parabens, and triclosan.  Numerous studies have tested samples of commercially produced GSE and found these contaminants to be present.  (See here, here, here and here.)  The biggest contaminant found is benzalkonium chloride, a chemical that rates a 7 in the cosmetics database that's a known immune system toxin, skin toxin, and possible cancer risk.

Some studies have shown that without these contaminants, a truly natural extract of grapefruit seed and pulp in ethanol or glycerin, had no antibacterial properties.  However, GSE apologists claim that GSE can be effective without these contaminants.  So, what is the truth? Is there such thing as a "pure" GSE, and if so, is it effective?

Grapefruit Seed Extract was first developed in 1972 by a man by the name of Dr. Jacob Harich.  Today, there is one main manufacturer of GSE that defenders claim is pure.  It is sold under the name Citricidal. This website describes how it is made:

Benefits of Grapefruit

I go through periods of eating grapefruits consistently and other times not touching one in months. Recently though I decided to start eating them consistently again after remembering how good I had felt when last eating them on a regular basis. Previously I had experienced a few noticeable benefits in terms of blood sugar regulation and fat loss when eating 3-5 grapefruits a week, especially at breakfast and even before bed. With no other changes to my diet or exercise….

Having written about 5 reasons to eat grapefruits in the past I wanted to delve a bit further into this topic and see exactly why grapefruits are so effective as a blood sugar stabilizer. From what I have read it seems to be down to a Flavonoid called Naringin which grapefruits are full of, and gives them their bitter taste. Although it can also be found in other citrus fruits none contain such high levels.

Benefits of Grapefruit and Grapefruit Diet

The grapefruit is a very popular citrus fruit, and a lot of people like eating grapefruits believing that they are very useful for their health. Grapefruit is one of the most miraculous and mystic fruits. First of all, it is about its name, the grapefruit: what can a citrus fruit have in common with grapes? The secret is in the way the fruit appears on the trees: in a cluster of 5-10 fruits, resembling the cluster of grapes. Latin name of the fruit is “citrus paradisi“, or “the citrus from paradise”. The fruits are usually 6-10 inches round, they have smooth dotted peel and 11-14 juicy segments with membranous lemon-color walls and refreshing, a little bitterish juice.

The grapefruit was first discovered by Griffith Hughes in 1750 in Barbados and named “the forbidden fruit of Barbados“. In the end of the eighteenth century, several travelers reported about a miraculous citrus they found in Jamaica. In those times, grapefruit tree leaves were used for decoration, but later on it was discovered that the fruits have a very pleasant taste, contain a lot of vitamins and other useful elements, and can be used as food. That is why in the end of the nineteenth century the farmers in the U.S and Europe started actively cultivating grapefruit trees and receiving good profits from their plantations.

Grapefruit Diet Review

Grapefruit link to breast cancer

Eating grapefruit every day could raise the risk of developing breast cancer by almost a third, US scientists say.

A study of 50,000 post-menopausal women found eating just a quarter of a grapefruit daily raised the risk by up to 30%.

The fruit is thought to boost levels of oestrogen - the hormone associated with a higher risk of the disease, the British Journal of Cancer reported.

But the researchers and other experts said more research was still needed.

The women had to fill in questionnaires saying how often they ate grapefruit and how big their portions were.

Oestrogen important

The researchers, at the universities of Southern California and Hawaii, found that women who ate one quarter of a grapefruit or more every day had a higher risk of breast cancer than those who did not eat the fruit at all.

Previous studies have shown that a molecule called cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) is involved in metabolising oestrogen hormones.

And grapefruit may boost blood oestrogen levels by inhibiting this molecule, allowing the hormones to build up.

Grapefruit seed extract helps alkalize the body. It is considered one of the most alkaline forming foods and of all fruits it is the most alkalizing. Alkalizing the body (raising pH) is one of the single most important health regeneration benefits available.

Disease cannot live in an alkaline environment within the body. It is claimed that cancer dies in a pH of 8.0. Countless other conditions are caused by an acid environment within the body. These same conditions are effectively treated by restoring the proper pH.

Grapefruit seed extracts pH is a low 2.0. Don't let this fool you as acid foods have alkaline effects on the body. The problem comes when you eat food that is acid forming such as meat, sugar and most grains. This food creates and acid environment within the body.

Truth About Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract. Sounds so friendly, doesn´t it? You´ve heard it touted as a “natural” preservative, and the health food store sells it in a capsule as an antifungal supplement. If everybody says that it´s natural they must be correct, right? Wrong.

Grapefruit seed extract is not grapefruit juice. It is also not grapefruit essential oil and it is most certainly not an herbal tincture. Chemical manufacturers take the leftover grapefruit pulp, a waste by-product from grapefruit juice production, and in an intensive, multi-step industrial chemical process, change the natural phenolic compounds into synthetic quaternary ammonium compounds. Typically, in chemical synthesis of this type, chemical reagents and catalysts are used under extreme high heat and pressure or vacuum. Synthetic ammonium chloride is one of the chemical catalysts used in this process.

The US Department of Agriculture´s (USDA) National Organic Program defines synthetic as “A substance that is formulated or manufactured by a chemical process or by a process that chemically changes a substance extracted from naturally occurring plant, animal, or mineral sources.” Grapefruit seed extract is a synthetic chemical compound, cannot be called “organic,” and is not permitted in organic food proucts.

Grapefruit seed extract

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE), also known as citrus seed extract, is a liquid derived from the seeds, pulp, and white membranes of grapefruit. Self-made natural GSE processed in the laboratory without solvents or synthetic agents is prepared by grinding the grapefruit seed and juiceless pulp, then mixing with glycerin. Commercially available GSE sold to consumers are made from the seed, pulp, glycerin, and synthetic preservatives all blended together. Grapefruit seed extract is sold as a food supplement and used in cosmetics because it is a claimed natural antimicrobial.

An early proponent was Dr. Jacob Harich (1919–1996). A long time promoter of GSE was Aubrey Hampton, the founder of Aubrey Organics. Some marketers of GSE affirm this extract to be a safe, natural, and an effective preservative. This extract has been stated by some practitioners of alternative medicine to possess antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. It has been recommended by some nutritionists for the treatment of candidiasis, earache, throat infections, and diarrhea. GSE is promoted at health food shops and on the internet.

'Grapefruit diabetes cure' unproven

The Daily Mirror today hails grapefruit as a “fruity 'cure' for diabetes”. The newspaper suggests that the chemical naringenin found in the fruit “can do the same job as two drugs used to treat type-2 diabetes”.

Surprisingly, the research in question only looked at the effects of naringenin on human and rat liver cells in the laboratory. This very preliminary research has certainly not identified a “cure” for diabetes. It only concentrated on how the chemical affected the fat metabolism of cells rather than processes directly related to diabetes. Until clinical trials are carried out in humans, it is not possible to say whether naringenin might be an effective medical treatment or whether it carries side effects.

Grapefruit is known to interact with enzymes in the body that break down many drugs. This can mean that consuming too much grapefruit can interfere with people’s drug treatment and cause harmful effects. Diabetics or other individuals taking medications should not attempt to replace or supplement their prescribed medication with grapefruit, as some news reports might suggest.

Menu for the 12-day Grapefruit Diet

The menu for the grapefruit diet is supposed to provide a jump start to weight loss, but monotonous consumption of grapefruit gets old very quickly. Let's take a closer look at this diet plan, and learn why it may not be your best path to weight loss.

Grapefruit, Grapefruit Everywhere

Ah, the grapefruit diet. It's been around for decades cycling in and out of favor, but it's always there for anyone who's searching for a quick way to lose a few pounds.

Grapefruit has been hailed as the ultimate fat burning fruit, and to a reasonable extent this is true. However, the basic premise of the grapefruit diet is that you can lose ten pounds in twelve days by including a serving of grapefruit with each meal. This sounds good in theory, but the plan has some flaws.

First, grapefruit is very acidic, and consuming it in steady quantities may leave you with mouth sores. Grapefruit can also irritate the stomach lining, so this is not the ideal weight loss plan for anyone who suffers from ulcers or other stomach ailments.

Bitter truth about the Grapefruit Diet

Could a favourite way to lose weight have been harmful, asks Victoria Lambert

Ahh, the Grapefruit Diet - what bitter memories

it invokes. That unmistakeable acid tang and the endless tangle of pith and fibre winding through the teeth - not to mention the twin sensations of deprivation and constant hunger.

For so many women, losing weight in the Seventies and Eighties was synonymous with eating grapefruits by the score.

The diet - beloved by celebrities such as Brooke Shields - claimed that enzymes in the fruit could boost metabolism and break down fat; would-be slimmers were told to eat no more than 800 calories a day (about half that recommended for steady weight loss) and to precede every meal with half a fruit.

Yet even though the results were always temporary, and nutritionists warned that the science was poor, and all we were losing was water, many felt the ends justified the means.

The diet was fast and - being fruit-based - safe. Yet, a study now suggests that the grapefruit - Citrus paradisi - could have been harming a whole generation of women.

Pink Grapefruit-Asti Sorbet

After the insanely rich and creamy roasted banana ice-cream I made earlier this month, the wild boar wanted something lighter and refreshing for a change.

This recipe is adapted from David Lebovitz' pink grapefruit-champagne sorbet recipe. I used Asti, a type of sweet white sparkling wine instead of champagne. Since the wine is quite sweet, I omitted the sugar and sweetened it with agave nectar. It's extremely refreshing with a mix of bitter and sweet flavours. Perfect for a hot summer day or after a spicy meal!

New Grapefruit Diet Review

The old 'miracle' grapefruit diet has been dismissed as a fad. But eating grapefruit as part of a healthy, balanced diet can give your weight loss a boost.

Eat Grapefruit and Lose up to 10lb!

The 80s might bring back fond memories of leg warmers, Flashdance and Duran Duran videos, but for anyone who was battling the bulge at the time, it probably also conjures up images of eating vast amounts of grapefruit! If you wanted guaranteed weight loss, the grapefruit diet was the plan to follow.

Providing no more than 800 calories a day, the grapefruit diet menu involved eating lots of 'fat-burning' grapefruit to kick-start your metabolism, as much black coffee as you liked, some daily protein (mainly boiled eggs) and the odd piece of dry toast.

At the time, nutrition experts dismissed it as another fad diet, explaining that the 'fat-burning' properties of grapefruit were, in fact, a myth and any weight loss that occurred was due to the extremely low and potentially dangerous calorie intake.

Grapefruit and weight loss

The grapefruit diet is not a myth. That's what a new study by the Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center at Scripps Clinic confirmed. Researchers there found that the simple act of adding grapefruit and grapefruit juice to one's diet can result in weight loss.

The 12-week pilot study, led by Dr. Ken Fujioka, monitored weight and metabolic factors, such as insulin secretion, of the 100 men and women who participated in the Scripps Clinic 'Grapefruit Diet' study.

On average, participants who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost 3.6 pounds, while those who drank a serving of grapefruit juice three times a day lost 3.3 pounds. However, many patients in the study lost more than 10 pounds.

'For years people have talked about the grapefruit diet, and some even swear by it, but now, we have data that grapefruit helps weight loss,' said Dr. Fujioka, principal researcher at the Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center at Scripps Clinic.

'Our study participants maintained their daily eating habits and slightly enhanced their exercise routine; the only dietary change was the intake of Florida grapefruit and grapefruit juice.'

Grapefruit Seed Extract Side Effects and Uses

We have all heard about the amazing benefits of the Brazilian Acai berry and various other ingredients now being added into nutritional and dietary supplements, but what about grapefruit seed extract? Could this possibly be the most potent and beneficial supplement ever to hit the market? Researchers think it may be just that, but just like everything else in this world, it is up to you to decide.

What Is It?

Grapefruit seed extract is of course an extract of juice from grapefruit, but it goes through processing steps that create a very powerful substance containing the juice and seeds. The main benefit is the alkaline nature of the fruit, which instills a very alkaline setting within the body.

This is very similar to gardening. Some plants need an alkaline soil in order to grow and bloom successfully while others will bend over and die in alkaline conditions.

Many uses of Grapefruit seed extract

I first came across Grapefruit seed extract when I lived in the U.K, and read some good reviews on this particular product. I purchased a little 100 ml (3.4 oz) bottle and used it occasionally in fruit juice. My aim was to see if it was effective in preventing, for example, travelers' tummy if we went on a short holiday over on the Continent and ate food that was different to what we were used to, or indeed if we had a local takeaway meal ("carry out" I think you call it in the States) that wasn't prepared, shall we say, in the most hygienic conditions. I was also interested in its espoused results on parasitic disorders. I found that it did help a lot, particularly if taken a few days after a "dodgy" meal.

Many years later, living in the south Pacific, I discovered I still had the bottle and used it to great effect on a trip to the jungles of east Malaysia, where we were served native foods which were definitely not what my stomach was used to ! Every time I go on a trip to a different country now I make sure I include it with me, as it is a handy aid in combatting or preventing stomach upset and other infections caused by nasty parasites, viruses and bacteria that are all around us.

Since then I have discovered it has quite wide-ranging uses, from a surface cleaner to an eczema treatment.

Initially perceived benefits of grapefruit seed extract portable, easy-to-take, alternative to antibiotics in some cases and no side effects !
